James obtained a BSc (Hons) Degree in Physiology and Zoology at the University of Sheffield, July 1975.

After a brief spell as a graduate trainee with Courtaulds plc, he moved to Smith and Nephew 25 years ago. He has held a wide variety of posts, ranging from product and sales management through to general management, product development and, particularly, international marketing. James was International Marketing Director of Smith and Nephew Medical, the largest Division of Smith and Nephew at the time, and was responsible for developing global product strategies. He was particularly involved in the development of the business in North America and Japan.

James was appointed as Managing Director of Smith and Nephew Pharmaceuticals, based in Romford, Essex, then Managing Director of Smith and Nephew Healthcare, the Division responsible for sales of all Smith and Nephew healthcare products in the UK. He became Group Director for New Technology Business in June, 1996, reporting to the Chief Executive. James was appointed President Wound Management, responsible for the global wound management business of the Smith and Nephew Group, in 1999. He was a member of the Group Executive Committee of Smith and Nephew plc and became Chairman for the Smith and Nephew Foundation in January 2002.

James is Chairman of Hull City Image, a private and public partnership aimed at enhancing the image and reality of the City of Hull through regeneration projects. He is also a Board member of Citybuild, Hull's Urban Regeneration Company. James is President of the Humberside branch of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Member of the Yorkshire Regional Council of the CBI and an Associate Director of Hull City AFC.
